Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, based in Los Angeles, California, was down for a week recently following a ransomware cyber attack on the hospital’s internal networks. The attack, where hackers encrypted sensitive patient data and offered to reverse it for a fee, wound up costing the hospital $17,000 in untraceable bitcoin in order to restore the system. Though this phenomenon isn’t new, it does appear to be on the rise — especially in the healthcare industry — and CIOs nationwide are on high alert.

With digital technologies continuing to advance and change the patient experience for the better, it’s no surprise that social media is becoming a more prevalent means for healthcare providers to connect with their patients. In fact, more than 40% of consumers say that information found via social media affects the way they deal with their health. Yet, all brand-building and engagement benefits aside, healthcare providers would be wise to do some research and have a solid plan in place before taking the social media plunge.
