The attack, where hackers encrypted sensitive patient data and offered to reverse it for a fee, wound up costing the hospital $17,000 in untraceable bitcoin in order to restore the system. Though this phenomenon isn’t new, it does appear to be on the rise — especially in the healthcare industry — and CIOs nationwide are on high alert.
